Google & Privacy.

I was looking for articles discussing Google and Privacy and I found an article called ‘’ Google’s New E-Mail Service Sparks Privacy Concern’’ in the Academic Search Premier. Google was the one that provided me with answers I could understand and discuss without having a problem but there wasn’t really any criticism toward Google. But if I wanted more in depth argument about Google and privacy, I would rather use Academic Search Premier because you could find everything about Google whether it was good or bad. Lexis Nexis did not really interest me in the answers but overall I consider Academic Search Premier to be the best method for me when it comes to my search on Google and privacy.

I chose to use that search tool because it allows me to understand what it is I should be finding as a student and not just a random online surfer. I need validation and proof so Academic Search Premier is better for me. While I was searching most of them stayed on the site I was on but some would send me to other student resources but they would still be considered a reference source. Since sometimes they limit the outside links a person can be sent to while doing a search as a student.

When you search through academic search premier they give you the results in a relevance format in which they order things from in the order of importance per say; Relevant to what it is a person is seeking. The format was also basic it provides enough information for you to click and see more and see if it is of importance to your search. During this search what I saw that was useful was the amount of information the Academic Search Premier allows you to find especially in the ways you can receive them, there is also a way where you can use the concept map which is a great way of using terms to rely on your search.

I used Google and Privacy as my keywords for the search. I used them because they were relevant and also it made sense to try the two together and see what I got. Nikki Schwartz created it and the Information Management Journal published it.
The information provided to me from the site was more informative than convincing. The point-of-view of the article is to aware people that there are concerns about the way Google is handing out free – e-mail based accounts yet there are privacy concerns in regards to how there are watchdogs guarding peoples incoming messages to get scanned and then receive advertisements that match keywords in the emails. Another issue is that people who cancel their account; well Google will hold a copy of the messages in their records. In my opinion, Google overall loses their privacy act because people wouldn’t put their trust in the Free Google e-mail based accounts.

This article was published in the Jul/Aug 2004, Vol. 38 edition of the Information Management Journal. It can still be used as a reference; it is still relevant .

WEB 3.0

Web 3.0 is like an advanced world of the internet. Within 10 years the internet will more personal with everyone around the world. The future internet world will be more accessible to everyone around the world not only on the computers but in other formats more affordable ways for everyone to enjoy and use. The Semantic Web is sometimes called Web 3.0. It is another way for machines to work and think similar or just like human beings. It can work faster than humans especially when it comes to technological usage.

Online searching would be extremely interesting within the next 15 years because searching on the internet has already been growing a tremendous amount. The Google Reader to the different ways to communicate with people such as chatting, and meeting people sites have changed drastically. Also, many the different sources to use for papers and research for personal use will change and become bigger in the amount of sources they will provide as well as the amount of options to sort them out. I think that 15 years from now it would probably be sorted out from the topic, the order of dates, order of times, and order of information and even in more details such as lettering and words related to the topic.

Overall, online searching will be like computers being likes to voice sync and you can tell computers what to look for and they will automatically find what it is you are looking for instead of typing in a search engine for what they are looking for. As Metz says in WEB 3.0, “You won’t search media with keywords in the future – you’ll search for media with media.” According to Metz, The internet has already taken the first step in creating an internet that is more innovated. In the near future, I believe that it will be the mind for many instead of having to use experience as a source for their papers.

Metz speaks about Seth Godin’s ideas of Web 4.0. Web 4.0 would be a place where family, colleagues and friends could keep up with each other through communication and other forms of contacting. ” People will not lay computers aside any time. Metz also quotes Godin’s words, “There are so many things the Web can do for me if it knows who my friends are, where they are, what they’re doing, what they’re interested in. how they can help me – and vice versa.” The odd thing about this is that in our time we can still access people without the use of internet we can use GPS systems and the internet sources. There are government sites which are allowed for public use which provide information that the government should be the only ones to use but it available to everyone who wishes to use it such as Hackers (Computer people who have ways to access computer illegally and use it to their advantage some just do it to get programs but the point is they are intelligent when it comes to knowledgeable things on the web.) GPS stands for Global Positioning System which is a way to know where you are going or to find out where another person is. It gives us the information people need; it helps to find where people who have the transmitters are.
Nowadays, GPS systems are more advanced. They are in our cell phones, mp3 players, in our cars, in our homes, in police cars even in the speed limit machines on the side of the highways. Technology has advanced so much already which to me is enormous because when 15 years from now come we would be known everywhere and the littlest things will find us maybe bar soap or like a toothbrush with GPS. The only downfall of this would be when the rapists, the robbers, the serial killers or just people in general start getting access to this they will be more accessible to you and what and where a person is and doing.
WEB 3.0 is already planned and dictated. People are already envisioning how it will look and it will consist of. If people start getting access to this knowledge it will be more dangerous to everyone. Instead of being help it will be the worst downfall possible. Overall, I believe that people should have more protection from easy access of personal information to any person.

RSS, Delicious & Blogs…

RSS, Delicious and Blogs are extremely difficult if you are not into computers as much in which I am not. I haven’t used these things ever in my life and I don’t think I will after the class only when it comes to paper probably and college things but a regular basis, I wouldn’t. RSS to me was quite difficult to comprehend because you need to subscribe and you cannot receive them if you do not have an account like Google reader, YAHOO and etc… Delicious was interesting because I never knew what it was based on bookmarks which forward you to a site which caught me off guard. But I think the best was the Blogs it was less conflicting with the information and it is like an online newspaper which is informative and easy to use and comprehend. In the blogs you can adjust how you want to view the information from chronological order to date which is a great way to work and find information. If I were to find myself using a particular type of format I would use Blogs. I mean I am a student blogger so I have a behind the scenes on the making of it so I can’t say blogs are bad. That would make me a hypocrite. So, blogs are in and delicious and RSS are out unless I mess with it a bit more to actually understand it a bit more. I would use these formats with more confidence for college papers and for my own use if one day I am curious and seek more knowledge on a particular thing but for now I would stick to Blogs. RSS and Delicious in my opinion is for the more advanced such as people who are consistently on computers and are very knowledgeable of the use of the internet with sources and web searches. Blogs are better for people who are being introduced and are slightly more advanced than beginners such as myself. So I would benefit using Blogs because there would be no way I would lose myself trying to find a way to seek information for certain things. Overall, these formats benefit everyone including myself and it is also good to know because if I should ever need to use these formats I would know and have knowledge about them which is not bad for a student.

Copyright Laws.

Copyrights are extremely important in society, and I also believe that the copyright laws are good but could use more adjustments in how they work. It needs more adjustments to today’s society and how technology has grown and how people have found ways to overcome the obstacles of getting threw stealing music, documents, etc… It is very important for people to understand how copyrighting really works. Overall, copyrighting is has protected many items from being stolen and misused. But I personally think that the law should consist of more than the basics but more details in how it is done and used. So that people can be aware of what they do and how they do it. If copyright laws were more effective on technology for example music, videos and multimedia I think it would be more helpful and more respectful for artists, and producers or anyone in the entertainment business as well as those other individuals who make a living with by creating entertainment for the public. I think that is what copyright laws lack. Copyright laws should become worldly known and spoken about more often because it is an important aspect of the world because of the amount of items being stolen, misused and causing people a lot of issues in getting their items back. The process of a lawsuit due to infringement is an extremely long procedure and should be faster and easier to the person who is dealing with someone stealing something that is theirs. Copyright laws are not to common among citizens in the United States, people do find ways around it and the law should do more that just defend those who are registered and make it accessible and known to every and anyone.

Google Book Search VS. CUNY+

I read the passages in the book titled: Playmates and Forbidden Fruits II. I enjoyed reading from the screen than reading from the paper itself because I was able to concentrate more on the screen and because it was easier than making yourself read from a paper. It was also way quicker for me .

The Google Book Search was much more effective and easier to research from when it comes down to finding books in general for any project or research paper. Unlike CUNY+ which is difficult to comprehend and provide information from Google Book allow you to preview the book and see what is inside the book which allows you to even read from then and see if it is a book in your interest. Honestly, as a picky reader for me to go and find a book in CUNY+ it was confusing and I just wouldn’t use it as a source to locate any book because I rather go to the Google Book Search, preview the book and get all the information I need instead of heading to the CUNY+ site and then have to go to the LaGuardia Library and pick it up. The only thing that was kind of distracting on the Google Book Search was the side bars with the location to find the books making the spaces to maneuver and to concentrate better a bit more difficult but at the same time it is very resourceful for people who are interested in buying the book so I can deal with a bit of distractions just so that others can have a good reading experience too. Reading from a screen is great, I enjoy it more that a book because I can get into it and not have to move from what I was doing prior or have to get comfortable to prepare to read a 300 page book which for me is hard if it is not interesting. But the overall experience in reading the poems by Emily Dickinson who I dearly admire was great!

My News Habits

My news habits consists of checking my email and getting directed to either a yahoo page or by checking out Google( http://news.google.com/nwshp?hl=en&tab=wn..) I really don’t read the newspaper because I believe some brainwash you and also get you more paranoid. If you live without looking at newspapers and news in general you can live a better life without dealing with the outside drama because eventually someone will come up to you and tell you. But not to drag a whole other subject in this blog. If I have to check the weather or traffic I usually look at Channel 02 on Optimum and I also check online on (www.yahoo.com). Sometimes if my family are watching the news they refer to the spanish channels like Univision which on Optimum is Channel 16.

I usually try and distance myself from news all together. But as far as news go if I hear a story for example like the presidential debates and things of that matter I will watch because we have a way to control how that’ll turn out which is voting. That’s how I catch up with news that I believe I should know about. Unless I hear from a friend or relative.

My Real Thoughts On ”Future Reading”

“Future Reading” by Anthony Grafton is similar to that of my response to a previous assignment. In his essay he provides a lot of information but more words than actual detail. He is basically stating that the universal library meaning the digital era where everything is found using databases and internet sources are not eliminating or removing encyclopedias. Books and all other paper sources from the earth but more of enhancing and creating more knowledge of the findings and the written word that can be found in our public libraries, archives and other places. A lot of he states is things that many people already know and see as they do more research and more searching.

In the essay Grafton states ‘’ the user of the electronic library would be able to bring together ‘’all other texts—past and present, multilingual—on a particular subject,’’ and, by doing so, gain ‘’ a clearer sense of what we as a civilization, a species, do you know and don’t know.’’ Others have evoked even more utopian prospects, such as a universal archive that will contain not only all books and articles but all documents anywhere—the basis for a total history of the human race.’’ In other words, he is trying to say that whoever uses databases or internet sources are accessing not only what is around them but history of other cultures and places which also allows people to search in depth and gain more knowledge about what the real history is behind what they are researching and using the sources online will allow people around the world to know more about the world entirely as a whole and know what is going on. In life knowing everything like to roots till now is extremely important because it can allow an individual to become more interested and gain the knowledge to teach others and be a walking book of knowledge.

On the second to last page Grafton states ‘’ The U.S National Archives alone contain some nine billion items. It’s not likely that we’ll see the whole archives of the United States or any other developed nation online in the immediate future—much less those of the poorer nations.’’ What he explains here is the statistics of the United States to the comparison of poorer countries. Grafton is trying to say that there are is so many information and knowledge in the United States that cannot be published online any time soon because of the amount so if we can’t have access to it how will countries of the poorer society going to access them as well when they are not as developed as the United States. The reason I chose this quote from the essay is because it ties in very well to the main idea of the whole electronic and digital era. Another reason was the whole idea of internet being the easier way but what about the easier way for the poorer nations who cannot afford a computer or access to the world of knowledge like we can? Well, I guess I can leave that to the author or for someone to come up with the answer to that.

Grafton states on the last page of his essay ‘’ At the New York Public Library, the staff loves electronic media. The library has made hundreds of thousands of images from its collections accessible on the web, but it has done so in the knowledge that its collection comprises fifty-three million items.’’ This quote is an example of how great the digital era has created a space in the world for more knowledge to be known. In other words images are now quicker to view and take up lesser time to find since they are accessible online.

Graftons essay about the future is quite debatable but can be understood. In the sense that if one was to sit and read an individual would understand. He provides a lot of knowledge about how internet has helped and has saved a lot of information to be known by any and everyone. The essay overall has proved its main idea clearly which is the digital era is taking over for good and is going to get bigger and better.
